Diabetes mellitus is a chronic metabolic disorder in which the body is unable to make proper use of glucose due to reduced secretion of insulin by the pancreas resulting in hyper glycaemia (high blood sugar) and glycosuria (sugar in urine).
Diabetes is not at all new to Ayurveda. It has been discussed in Ayurveda since ancient times by the name of prameha or madhumeha. It has also been called as maharoga (major disease) the disease in which person will pass large quantity of turbid urine frequently is diagnosed as prameha.
Ayurvedic medicine for diabetes aims at treating the root cause of this disorder which according to Ayurveda lies in the digestive and excretory systems of the body.
